ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE: MONITORING NITROGEN LEVELS IN SOIL. Emma. The purpose of this experiment was to determine what did and did not keep usable nitrogen in the soil. Cups were filled with soil of which some were then watered and/or aerated and one placed at a slant. The watering and aeration continued for a week. The results were unsubstantial, although as a rule, water tended to increase the amount of nitrogen found in the soil. Those hoping to grow plants could use these types of results to determine what steps to take in order to maintain a healthy amount of usable nitrogen in the soil for their plants if this experiment were preformed correctly and effectively.
